First Day of Kindergarten!

We had a fantastic first day!!  This is going to be such a fun year!  We read The Kissing Hand, talked about first day feelings, made Welcome to Kindergarten books, took pictures, took a tour of the school, drew self-portraits, played outside, read The Night Before Kindergarten, rested, listened to music, went to art class, looked at books, sang songs, and had a class meeting.  I think we will all sleep well tonight!

A couple things:

1. DONATIONS!  If you are interested in donating snacks (crackers, pretzels, cheese sticks, cuties, etc), Kleenex, hand sanitizer, or wipes, please send them to school in your child's backpack.  It looks like we'll go through those items very quickly this year!  Thank you!

2. VOLUNTEERS!  Let me know if you are interested in volunteering to help out in the classroom (starting September 16th).  There will also be a sign-up sheet at Back-to-School Night:

M, Th, F (choose one day) Centers, 10:20-11:20

M-F Recess Duty, 9:30-10
M-F Lunch/Recess Duty, 11:30-12:10

We will also need volunteers for the following pull-out classes (starting immediately):
Monday- Art, 1-1:50
Tuesday- PE, 10-11
Wednesday- Computer Lab/Library, 10-11 (2 volunteers needed)
Thursday- Music, 1-1:30
Friday- PE, 2-3

email me at lvomvolakis@tlcs.us

THANK YOU!!

The following information is also in the take-home folder in your child's backpack:

Welcome to Kindergarten!  I am so excited to have you in my class this year!  Mrs. Deutsch and I have some great adventures planned and we can’t wait to begin our adventure with you.

Here are some things you will need to bring to school:

·        Two changes of clothes (one for the cubby and one for the backpack) in labeled Ziploc bags

·        A large backpack without wheels

·        A blanket for rest time (approx.  3’x4’)

·        A healthy lunch and TWO snacks

·        A smile J

* A small pillow and/or comfort buddy is allowed at rest time, but it must fit in your child’s backpack.  We will send rest items home every Friday to be washed.  Thank you!
I look forward to getting to know all of you this year!

Homework:

Regular weekly homework will begin in two weeks.  Beginning September 9th,  I will send home the entire week’s homework every Monday and it will be due every Friday.  Please help your child complete a little homework each night until it is complete.

The following assignments should be completed by Friday every week (again, this homework will begin in two weeks):

·        Phonics page for the letter of the week

·        Handwriting page for the letter of the week

·        2-3 choices from our monthly family activity calendar

·        Ten minutes (or more!) of reading every night with a parent, guardian, or older sibling, etc.  Reading together every night is VERY important.  Let’s work together to develop a love of books and reading in our children!

From time to time I will assign a special project for your child to complete with you at home in lieu of the regular weekly homework.  I hope these projects will be fun, engaging, and educational for both you and your child.

Over the next two weeks, I would like you to help your child complete the “See How I Grew” poster included in his or her folder.  This is a great opportunity for you to discuss some important events that have occurred in your child’s life so far.  Most of the coloring and drawing should be done by your child, but please help with the writing and anywhere else help is needed.  This assignment is due next Friday, September 6th, but you can turn it in any time before then.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.   Have fun!
